76ers Make Big Move in Draft

During the prior NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers were one of the most improved teams in the league. After being one of the worst few teams in the league for several consecutive seasons, the 76ers took a big step forward and showed that they could soon compete for a spot in the playoffs. The team took another big step in developing their young quart of players when they participated in the NBA draft (https://thesixersense.com/2017/06/24/philadelphia-76ers-draft-strategy-commitment-process/).

During the 2017 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers selected Markelle Fultz with the number one overall pick. The selection of Fultz will make the team far more athletic and will allow them to compete with some of the top offenses in the league. Fultz was the number one rated player on pretty much every team’s board due to his skill and size for the position. Last year he was the best freshman in the country and he led a dominant University of Washington offense.

The selection of Fultz came after the team made a bold move to trade up to get him. They previously had the number three overall pick, but swapped it with Boston while also throwing in a few other future picks. Now that they have Fultz on their roster, the team should have one of the best young cores in the league. Next year, they will have a starting lineup that includes him, Ben Simmons, and Joel Embiid. Simmons was out all of last year with an injury, but should be ready to play at the very start of the season. Embiid, who previously spent a lot of time on the injury report, was finally able to play in a lot of games and showed that he could soon be a very dominant center.

With the addition of Fultz, the 76ers are not looking like a favorite to finally make the playoffs. They are considered the second or third best team in their division and are considered one of the top 7 or 8 best teams in the conference. While it is still likely that they are several years away from being able to compete for an NBA championship, they should see a lot of improvement next year.
