Is Reid a real genius?

January 4, 2007 | By Harry Baker | Discuss

I am tired of hearing about what a "genius" Andy Reid
is because we made the playoffs. What did he do? He
just gave the ball to his best player a lot more when
McNabb went down. Thats genius? Westbrook makes Reid
look like a genius, just like Emmitt did with the dude
with all the hairspray, just like Montana did in San
Fran.

Genius is having a superstar on your team that can
rise to the moment and carry the team on his back.
Genius is the athlete that refuses to lose.

Is Cowher less a genius this year? Or did injuries
make his genius dissappear?

We have a competitive team this year because our
geniuses are in the payroll department.

Dollars buy talent. Some teams overpay, some get
bargains.

We have a competitive team because other teams in our
league spent their money foolishly and/or got hurt
worse than us this year.

If Andy Reid has a genius it must be in accounting, in
bargain hunting. Yeah, we are the gold standard.
Nothing personal, its just business. He can talk
people into taking less money like John Runyan and
Trotter, using their pride and loyalty to their
teammates as bargaining chips. But it's still up to
the players to seize the moment on game day. We are
lucky to have a Westbrook and a Dawkins to fire our
team up. And maybe they can dig deep enough in the
next four weeks to find a way to take this collection
of businessmen in helmets to the promised land. But
if they don't, no biggie, we've locked the prime beef
into the system for a long time to come with all the
recent linemans contracts. We will be at least
mediocre for years to come with a solid offensive line
and eventually we may win one. Mediocre is good
enough for the playoffs, and who knows what can happen
in a game? The ball is oddly shaped. It bounces
funny. You can't coach a bounce. Look at all the
replays some week. Every game is decided by inches, a
throw that is just too long, or just to short, a
finger tip away. The real players feel the game and
feel the momnet and make those big plays. The real
players aren't listening to the coaches, they are just
asking to be on the field to make the plays. After a
while the coach is tuned out. It's all talk after
awhile. Action is taken by the players and the real
teams find a way to do it for one another. The coach
is just along for the ride. I mean, look at what
happens when a program is successful. All the
assistants get hired out by the competition. All the
coaches ideas are the same. Look at the newest
genius, Sean Payton. What is his genius? Bush and
Brees and the stud receiver. Sean Payton suckled at
the teat of parcells and other NFC East geniuses. He
might bring a new energy to the thing, but its all
about the sales pitch, hes the flavor of the month,
good for him, theyll be a new one next year and its
all bullcrap, smoke and mirrors, a sales pitch. So
when the Eagles make the Superbowl sometime in the
next few years and they will, no doubt about it, cheer
for the real heros, the payroll department. They are
keeping us at the very top of medicore with their
canny cap moves and longterm contracts and doing it
just a little better than average right now. The real
heros are the lawyers who draw up the contracts and
the bullies who force the athletes into bad deals in
the name of teamwork. Thank Runyan and Trotter. They
took a million dollars less for the team. They have a
Million less in their bank accounts and our team is 2
million dollars better as a result. Two extra million
is alot in this mediocre league.
