Durbin's start costs the Phils

August 31 , 2007 | By Khristian Peel | Discuss

This game did not start off good. Ok that's not true because Jimmy Rollins hit for his 8th leadoff home run of the season, but J.D. Durbin gave up a base hit on his VERY first pitch to Hanley Ramirez.

Durbin gave up 5 hits, 4 earned runs, gave up a walk, and threw for a total of 19 pitches......all in the first inning, and on top of that, he didn't get an official inning of work because he couldn't get a single out in the first.

Now I know I was the one that said that Durbin couldn't do any worse than Adam Eaton, who by the way still is the worst starting pitcher in the N.L., but I highly doubt that Eaton wouldn't be able to pick up an out on the Florida Marlins.

So, Durbin gives up a hit on the first pitch in the bottom of the first, he hits the next batter, Dan Uggla with the pitch and puts him on base and gave up an RBI single to Jeremy Hermida and that was just the start of it.

He goes on to give up 5 runs in that inning and Charlie Manuel finally decides to take him out the game (finally).

So he brings Clay Condrey in to try to get them out of the jam that Durbin put them in because the Marlins have the bases loaded.

Upon which, he throws a wild pitch on the very first pitch that HE threw and they score again to take a 6-1 lead. Their offense scored three runs in the second but they couldn't quite catch up.

Now, we lose one game against a bad team, and I know we're not going to win every game but it just hurts so much every time we do lose, and they're 3 games behind the Mets in the N.L. East because of New York's win over the Braves, and 2 and a half games behind San Diego and Arizona in the wild card.

See what happened when you lose one game that you're not supposed to lose?

This is what happens, we fall a full game back in the division and a half game back in the wild card and they cannot afford to NOT make the playoffs this year.

Hopefully, we can win the third game in this series and if we don't, we'll be right back to where we were before we swept the Mets, and that's the point, they swept the Mets and they act like they can't beat mediocre teams.

Well, we'll see what happens because we play them again next weekend and we play the Mets again, so if this team is for real, they'll step up to the plate and handle their business, literally.
