Incredible. Today, the word we choose to describe the Philadelphia Eagles’ performance, is incredible. From the opening kickoff, the Eagles clearly displayed they were the best team on the field and all but silenced all of their critics (Including yours truly). The Detroit Lions entered the game with a 2-0 record and their offense has been the talk of the NFL. There were many concerns how the Eagles would match up with the Lions star receivers Roy Williams and heralded rookie Calvin Johnson. While the Eagles were favored to win the game according to Las Vegas, many sports writers were predicting Detroit to pull off the win. There was concern the Eagles would start the season 0-3. However, that was not to be.
The Eagles had a different look today and it wasn’t just their throwback uniforms that confused the Lions. In the first half, the Eagles had 7 drives and scored six times. The Birds offense had never looked better and showed they clearly overmatched the Detroit Lions entire defensive unit.
As for Donovan McNabb, he threw for 332 yards in the first half alone and played as well as he ever has. Many people say his bad start had to do with injuries he has sustained but McNabb showed no affects of injury yesterday. McNabb surveyed the field and had pinpoint control. McNabb, who was facing heat for comments he made about black quarterbacks in interview on HBO played like a man possessed and showed he is still an elite NFL quarterback.
McNabb’s favorite target was Kevin Curtis. Curtis, who was the Eagles most prized free agent acquisition showed he has Pro Bowl potential as he was opened all day long. Curtis had 9 catches for 205 yards and 3 touchdowns. Curtis took a major step towards establishing himself as the Eagles number one target.
To go along with Curtis, Brian Westbrook showed why he is one of the NFL’s most underrated talents. Westbrook had over 100 yards rushing and receiving and is clearly the leader of the Eagles offense. Westbrook scored 3 touchdowns on the day.
While the offense will get all of the headlines, the Birds defense had 9 sacks on the day and controlled the tempo of the game. With many concerns about Brian Dawkins not playing, the Eagles showed they are a deep team that can compete with anyone.
In the end, it was the Eagles coming away with a 56-21 victory. The only thing we are left to wonder is, how can this team look so bad one week and so incredible the next? The Eagles will face their NFC East rival the New York Giants next week in what should be a tough game. If the Birds continue to play like they did yesterday, they may be unstoppable.
Note: 56 is the most points the Eagles have ever scored under head coach Andy Reid. Donovan McNabb ended the day with a perfect quarterback rating.
