No way, not again!! You are not sucking me back onto that bandwagon just because the Phillies are 3 games behind the Mets for 1st place. The Phillies have done this to us fans too many times for me to take the bait again. After doing this for 5 out of the past 6 seasons, I’m onto them. Talk to me in August if they are still in contention and then maybe I will jump back on the bandwagon but not now, not in June just because they have won a few games and are starting to look like contenders. Philly fans have been down this road before where the Phillies will play well and get themselves back into contention, just to fall on their collective faces again, and fall right back out of contention as soon as us fans get our hopes up. So, yeah, I will give them some props that they are playing well but will it last? From past experience, I would have to give a resounding, NO!!!
Haven’t we been down this road last season with them when they had their fate in their own hands. They were a game up in the wild card chase in mid-September with a 4-game series against the lowly Washington Nationals and then a series with the Marlins, who were nearly as bad. At that point we were sure the Phillies were going to take both of those series’ and march on into the playoffs with a head full of steam, ready to make a serious run toward the World Series. However, that’s not how it played out. Instead, they collapsed down in Washington losing 3 of 4, and then they continued to drive us fans crazy by being swept by the Marlins, thus pretty much running themselves right out of the playoff picture. So, if I’m a little cynical about their current winning streak I think I have good reason to be, considering what this team has put us fans thru in the last few years.
Come on, it was only a week and a half ago that everyone in this town was ready to run this team and the ownership out of town because of the poor product on the field. Now I’m supposed to believe that they are a completely different team? I’m not buying it! It smells fishy to me. Dave Montgomery and those owners were under some serious scrutiny and then all of a sudden the Phillies went up to Shea Stadium and swept the Mets to keep themselves in the chase. Again, I say, I’m not buying it! I think Montgomery called in a favor and asked the Mets ownership to have mercy and let the Phillies win the series. He was probably begging the Mets owners like a little bitch to please let the Phillies win so that the local media and fans down here would get off their backs. Think about it, that series didn’t mean crap to the Mets, but it did mean everything to the Phillies. So the Mets threw the Phils a bone and let them win just to take some heat off of these pathetic owners down here.
You think I’m crazy and that this is a totally absurd theory? Is it? Look at it from the perspective of the Mets. They enjoy having these retarded owners down here who are content with mediocrity and not winning the division because that takes the pressure off of them and makes it easier to win when the Phillies are fielding a crappy team. They have a tougher market up there to deal with than down here so they don’t want these current apathetic owners to sell the team and get some ownership in here that might make their jobs that much harder if they start acquiring legitimate players who might actually make a run at winning the division. So, to help maintain the status quo and take the heat off the Phillies owners, the Mets threw them a bone and tank the series. If you still think I’m crazy, let’s see who wins the series down the road when it really matters in August and September. My guess it will be the Mets.
I hate being this cynical but this Phillies team is going to have to show me more than this current win streak for me to believe, because I’m tired of being let down every time I jump back on that bandwagon. I hope you other Philly fans won’t fall for this either because until the money stops flowing into that stadium nothing will change and we will continue to have our hopes dashed year after year because these owners are not committed to winning. They are only committed to the dollar.
