Dream With Me and KG

March 26, 2007 | By Matthew List | Discuss

With the Sixers' season coming to a close it’s time to look toward the future.

Three first round draft picks in this summer's NBA draft should produce some good talent; if Billy King and Larry Brown pull the right strings that is.

So let’s say the Sixers do have a productive draft, and let’s also say that Andre Iguodala keeps improving. More than likely the Sixers will be an up and coming team after next season with over 20 million in cap space to spend after clearing Iverson and Webber off the payroll.

Oddly enough superstar Kevin Garnett is talking about opting out of his contract for 2008-2009. He was quoted last month saying as much. “Thank God for opt-outs.” This is due to the fact that Garnett is sick of General Manager Kevin McHale’s inability to get another superstar to play with him. “We made no moves, typical” is what Garnett had to say about the lack of moves by the Timberwolves last trade deadline.

So just dream with me for a minute. The Sixers have a young superstar in Iggy, then get more young players from this year’s draft, develop the team next season, then bring in KG for the icing on the championship cake. With Shaq on his way out and the Pistons superstar Rasheed Wallace aging, the Sixers would be a premier team in a weak Eastern Conference along with Chicago and most likely Orlando. Garnett would be 32 years old.

Would Kg want to come here? I think so. The Sixers would probably be the team with the most young talent that could afford his max contract, plus Iguodala will be an established superstar at that point if he keeps climbing the ladder. All of this is of course speculation but, what else do we have these days as Sixers fans? Keep a close eye on KG next season; other rumors have him being traded to Atlanta next year before he opts out. If the Sixers pulled this off it would certainly be a coup and this town would be re-energized towards pro ball.

Keep your fingers crossed.
