Sixers eclipse the Suns, defeating them 99-94.
The Suns were attempting to become the first team in NBA history to win all of their inter-conference road games. And, the Sixers pulled off a shocker tonight as an 8-point underdog.
They started off the game hot and the Suns shot under 40% in the first quarter. And, the Sixers held on from there as they opened up with a 12-point lead in the first quarter.
For the Sixers to hold off an offensive juggernaut and great team like the Suns to 94 points goes to show they are evolving as a basketball team. They are a young team and are certainly not a playoff team, but this can do wonders for a team's morale.
Andre Iguodala had a fantasy basketball player's dream of a game with 24 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, but 7 turnovers. And, Samuel Dalembert had 12 rebounds.
On the other side Amare "Stat" Stoudemire led the Suns with 31 points and 14 rebounds, looking closer and closer to the MVP candidate of two years ago before he had microfracture knee surgery.
Sure the Suns were playing without two starters in Shawn Marion and Boris Diaw, and Steve Nash tweaked his ankle before returning, but it's still a really good win for a young franchise.
As a sort of joke, I have been covering the Suns throughout the season because the Sixers have suffered through a miserable season.
The irony is, they just so happened to knock off the team that I called the "anti-Sixers" for much of the year. This won't stop me from providing Suns updates though.
They are now 5 games out behind the Celtics in the lottery race.

Phillies
are flirting with a $100 million payroll.
Say it isn't so; the prognosticators including myself all said the Phillies were going to slash their payroll this season. I expected them to be around $80-$85 million. But, they have proven me wrong with their acquisitions of Freddy Garcia, Adam Eaton, et al.
Now, they would be looking at a $96 million payroll after they sign Ryan Howard.
Right now both sides are in negotiations and are expected to come up with something by no later than Friday. Don't expect a mega-deal; this will just be a one-year deal for at least $1 million.

Eagles extend safety Quintin Mikell for 4 years.
The Eagles have extended back-up safety and special team specialist Quintin Mikell to a 4-year contract extension. Details of the deal have not been disclosed.
The deal is expected to be similar to a deal just signed by 49ers safety Keith Lewis, who signed for three-years and $3.6 million, with $650,000 upfront.
In other words, this deal certainly won't break the bank.
Mikell was expected to be one of their key signings because he can help out in various areas, backing up at safety, playing some linebacker, and he's their best player on special teams.
They are expected to work something out with defensive end Juqua Thomas this week.

Flyers lose again in OT, this time fall to Islanders 6-5.
I've made mention in my coverage of the Phoenix Suns' basketball season that there are three certainities in life; death, taxes, and the Suns will win if they play good defense. Well, there's a fourth certainity; the Flyers will find a way to lose in OT or in a shootout.
Tonight was no different. Trent Hunter scored his second goal on a power play with just under 31 seconds left in OT to defeat the Flyers 6-5 tonight.
Jason Blake had a hat-trick for the Islanders who are in the thick of the playoff race.

Sixers step up in second half as Kings fade to win 89-82.
The Kings were coming off a win the night before and we all know the trend with teams coming off a win on a back-to-back when they're on the road; it usually bodes well for the home team who is rested.
The Kings started out great, but faded like a cheap shirt in the second half.
The Sixers got torched in their previous games by the Charlotte Bobcats and Milwaukee Bucks, yielding opponents' field goal percentages of 51 and 52% respectively. Then, they clamped down against the Kings.
Andre Iguodala had his second straight quality game after his mini-slump, by leading the way with 22 points. Sammy D had 20 points and 17 rebounds, helping the Sixers attain a 55-40 rebouding advantage.
--------------------------------
Steve Nash led the charge tonight with 25 points and 11 assists. Amare Stoudemire, who had 43 points in his previous game followed it up with 23 points and he hit the boards and came away with 18 rebounds.
As I had stated above. There are four certainities in life and one of those is that the Suns will win if they play defense. They held the Pacers to 92 and gave up just 13 pointss over the final 15 minutes.

Jeff Garcia era over in Philly and he's disappointed with the outcome.
There are many upset Eagles fans and for good reason. However, this is the business as they say.
Do I agree with the Eagles entirely in their move to lock up A.J. Feeley, but allowing Garcia to walk before free agency begins? No.
But, do I understand why they're doing it? Absolutely.
This isn't about Donovan McNabb being sensitive, which is the most over-blown load of nonsense I've ever heard in my life. When you hear some of the people call into 610-WIP you'd think McNabb is pissing and moaning about being booed at the draft ad infinitum.
I myself have heard him mention it once. There is a small contingent of people out there who put these outright lies out there about the greatest quarterback in the history of the Eagles and they will do anything to denigrate and bash him.
I really do think some of it has to do with race. I myself have spoken to many football fans and Eagles fans who feel because he's a black quarterback he's not as intelligent as a white quarterback. And, I feel so sorry for those people because they are blind by their ignorance.
And, they'll use the same old bogus arguments about how "bad" he is. Hell, they'll talk about his facial expression after he goes back to the sideline. Who the hell cares?
And, their latest horse (expletive deleted) argument is in regards to his sensitivity. Here's my rebuttal for these haters.
Donovan McNabb is the franchise quarterback. End of story. Why would he feel "threatened" by Jeff Garcia's presence? He isn't going anywhere because he is on track to recover fully by the beginning of the season. And, he sure as hell isn't going anywhere because of his signing bonus and the fact that it would collapse within one season.
This is about the money they allocate to certain positions. And, we don't really know what went on behind closed doors. The Eagles and his agent were talking. Let's not get it mistaken.
However, the Eagles can't pay him starter money. Added to that, they really need to lock up A.J. Feeley for the long term, because he's their back-up of the future.
I think the Eagles should have waited until free agency began to perhaps negotiate, but it appears Garcia's agent wanted to pit the Eagles against another team to get a better offer and they didn't want to wait.
Garcia says he was taken aback by this and is a little bitter by the way it went down.
His run in Philly will go down as the greatest short-lived career ever. Honestly, can we think of any other athlete who had such a short tenure, but had such a meteoric rise to success and popularity that quickly?
I certainly can't. He'll go down as one of the more fascinating stories in the history of Philadelphia sports and will be missed sorely.

Redd and Williams too much for Sixers with 26 points a piece; defeat Sixers 109-90.
Michael Redd and Mo Williams brought their A-game Saturday night on their home court against a suddenly struggling Sixers team, who have now lost five of their last six games.
The Sixers started out cold in this game, then caught fire in the first quarter. But, after that Milwaukee dominated them in each quarter and never looked back.
Andre Iguodala got back on track after suffering through arguably two of his worst shooting performances of his career; he had 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting. He also had 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal for the struggling 76ers. Sammy D had 15 points, but just six rebounds, and more importanly zero blocks.
It seems as though the Sixers are in the midst of an official skid. Aside from their victory against the Knicks, they have played poorly on the most part over the past two weeks.
For those of you who are keeping tabs on the Sixers' lottery chances, they are still the third-worst team in the NBA. Here are the leaders in the 2007 NBA Lottery Sweepstakes.
Boston 13-42
Memphis 15-42
Philadelphia 18-38
Milwaukee 20-37

Now, that the Sixers are officially back in the toilet I'm bringing back the Suns highlights for all of you who want to follow a basketball team that's fun to follow, and fun to watch I must add.
The Suns defeated the T'Wolves 116-104 Friday night behind Shawn Marion's 27 points and 14 rebounds.
Barbosa added 24 and "Stat" a.k.a. Amare Stoudemire had 23 points to help the Suns win their third game in a row. They recently fell victim to a 3-game losing streak, which is nearly unheard of for teams in their stratosphere. Mind you, this is a team which has two winning streaks of 16 games or more this season, which ranks up there with the greatest regular season teams of all time.
The Suns will continue a 4-game road trip tomorrow against the lowly Atlanta Hawks. They will then head to Indiana, and head into South Philly on Wednesday night to rap up their Eastern tour.

Flyers fall to the Maple Leafs and trade Zhitnik to Atlanta.
The Flyers continued their quest towards the #1 overall pick in the NHL draft with a 5-2 loss to the Torono Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
Added to that, they made another deal and sent Alexi Zhitnik to the Atlanta Thrashers for highly touted defensive prospect Braydon Coburn.
The Flyers are doing the right things in this reclamation project. They realize they stink, so they aren't doing everything it takes to win games (and it seems their Wachovia-mates the Sixers are buying into the same philosophy) and are acquiring prospects and draft picks left and right. They acquired two top-tier prospects, along with 1st and 3rd round picks last week in their deal with the Nashville Predators for Peter Forsberg. Now, they'll add another defensive prospect to their bevy of youngsters.
A first-round pick (eighth overall) in the 2003 draft, Coburn has just four assists in 29 games for Atlanta, averaging almost 12 minutes ice time a game. Many of the younger Flyers are familiar with him as he played for the Chicago Wolves during the 2005 Calder Cup finals against the Phantoms.

Phillies looking at the little things to get them in the postseason this year.
How many times have you said it to yourself, "F--- if only they had not made that error in the 7th inning, or got caught stealing, or missed a cutoff throw, they would have won that game."
Well, Phillies bench coach Jimmy Williams recognizes this and understands that a stupid play in a game can mean the difference between Wild Card and watching the game from home like the rest of us observers.
How did we win that one extra game, where we went on and they went home?" Williams said last week at Bright House Networks Field. "Another year, we beat the Dodgers by one game. You play 162 games and win by one game. Why? Was it getting that guy from second to third? What was it? Was it a pickoff play? I don't know what it was, but it was proper fundamentals. It was teaching properly and being repetitive and working with a kid. If you tell a kid 100 times and he doesn't quite get it, tell him 101."

Sixers get romped by Bocats in Charlotte; falling to them 102-87.
The Sixers made the Bobcats look like the Phoenix Suns for one night. They entered this game with one of the worst field goal percentages in the league, but shot 51% tonight.
Kyle Korver followed up his 31-point performance against the Knicks with 21 points. Andre Miller added 15 points and handed out 7 assists.
Iguodala had his second straight poor-shooting performance; going just 3-for-12 and hitting on four of seven free throws. What's even worse is that aside from again scoring just 10 points, he didn't get his first assist until the end of the game.
From Gerald Wallace to Omeka Okafor to Matt Carroll, the Sixers just couldn't stop any of them.
It's one of those games where you write off as a clunker.

Flyers come back only to fall once again in OT to Hurricanes.
Aside from having a horrific losing streak at home, the Flyers probably have a good streak going as far as coming back in games only to lose.
After falling behind early 2-0, they fought back to tie it up, but lost in overtime on a Glen Wesley shorthanded goal.
Upon giving up a shorthanded goal on a 4-to-3 advtantage after fighting back just goes to show you how brutal the Flyers' season has been.

Curt Schilling to file for free agency after 2007 season.
Put Curt Schilling on the list of potential pitchers for the Phillies to target in the off-season.
He has announced he will file for free agency after this season.
Even though he'll be 41 years old, that shouldn't turn the Phillies away. Pitchers such as Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, and Jamie Moyer are proof that pitchers can be quite successful into their 40's.
And, Schilling has the winning pedigree, having won a pair of World Series rings with the Diamondbacks and Red Sox. Also, who can forget the game 6 in the ALCS when he pitched with his ankle bleeding; the famed "Bloody Sock game."
Schilling made no bones about his love for Philadelphia and that he wanted to come back in 2004. The Phillies shouldn't pass him up again. He'd make a great number 3 starter behind Brett Myers and Cole Hamels. And, should they resign Freddy Garcia, they'd have one of the best rotations in baseball.

Sixers open up with a win in first game back from All-Star break.
The Sixers fought back from an early deficit to wallop the Knicks 104-84 at the Wach.
Kyle Korver matched his career-high with 31 points and had six three-pointers. The Sixers also got a season-high 58 points from their bench, thanks in part to Korver's hot hand.
Andre Iguodala had one of his worst shooting nights as a pro, going just 1 for 9, but finishing with 10 points. He helped out in other areas, which he so often does, notching 9 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.
Joe Smith had a couple nice blocks and had 12 garbage points in the fourth quarter to finish with 14 on the night.
Korver was quoted afterwards as saying, he didn't want to talk about the "P word" meaning playoffs. It would be a joke if the Sixers did try and make it into the playoffs.
They should just continue to develop their youngsters and become a better defensive-minded team. And, when the lottery comes in May hope for the best.

Despite Tom Heckert's recent comments regarding the Eagles' ability to free up money on this year's cap, it will be highly unlikely that they will bring back both Garcia and Stallworth.
I do see them making an attempt to retain Stallworth. However, he has recently stated that the team is very comfortable with A.J. Feely at quarterback and they feel they are in a good position to have him on their squad. Those comments ring loud and clear that A.J. is their back-up heading into next season.
As far as Stallworth goes; the Eagles aren't going to go crazy and spend Deion Branch-type money on him considering he caught less than 40 passes and was injured for a quarter of the season. I feel they should re-sign him, but not for $7 million a year. If they can get him for around $4 million then they're in good shape. Otherwise, they should look to put the money into a run stuffer and outside linebacker.

Flyers get romped by Sabres 6-3 in Buffalo.
Robert Esche and Buffalo do not go well together. In his last start there he gave up 9 goals in a humiliating game, which marked the beginning of the end of Ken Hitchcock's career.
This time around he got lit up again and was pulled before the third period as Buffalo led 4-2.
If there was a positive tonight it's that R.J. Umberger got revenge for the dirty hit he took in the playoffs last year at the hands of Brian Campbell during overtime of Game 1. Umberger ended up suffering a concussion from the open-ice shoulder check.
Aside from the that the Flyers were awful tonight. And, what could you expect when they're playing one of the best teams in the league?
These are two teams that are light years apart. One is a contender and the other is in blow-up mode and rebuilding.
--------------------------------
A new star is emerging with the Sixers also with the initials A.I.
And, we're talking about Andre Iguodala of course, who has averaged 22.6 points, 7.5 assists, and 6.2 rebounds in his last 13 games. In addition, he had three games where he scored 30 or more points and two triple-doubles.
Ever since the old A.I. left, Iguodala now handles the ball more and doesn't just get alley-oop passes or set-ups for dunks.
Remember the days when it looked like Iguodala was just a dunker. Well there's a reason for that. Iverson hogged the ball for a good 50-60% of the game and would generally only give the ball up to Iguodala in fast break situations or on alley-oops.
Now, that a real point guard is in there he can develop. And, it sure looks like he's well on his way to becoming an all-star caliber player.

The Phillies hope to end the 14-year playoff drought.
It was clear once Bobby Abreu was traded that this is a new Phillies team, a team with a new attitude. I like the confidence the players are exuding.
Jimmy Rollins is taking a leadership role and it's good that he's willing to put it out there that they're the team to beat. This is the first time since 1993 anyone has stepped up to make that sort of declaration.
"We're the team to beat. I can't put it any other way," Rollins said. "Anything short of a ring is not a great season. You don't play this game to go to the playoffs. You play to be a champion."

Ryan Howard and Phillies begin preliminary talks on contract.
Don't expect the Phillies to sign Howard to a lucrative long-term contract just yet. And, really why should they? He is in just his third year in the majors and won't become arbitration-eligible until next season. They are probably going to just work something out for this season.
For people to be getting in a frenzy over his contract is senseless. He'll make his money and the Phillies will pay him. It just doesn't make much sense for the Phillies to make that sort of commitment until he proves himself for another season.
At the same time, it would be nice gesture to throw him $2 million for this season as opposed to signing him for $700,000.

A few days after playing what was probably their best game of the season against the Rangers, the Flyers laid an egg tonight against the Bruins.
Gone was the fire evident in this team on Saturday.
The lone bright spot was Scottie Upshall, who scored his second goal in his second game with the Flyers, since joining them after the Forsberg trade.
--------------------------------
Knuble likely out for the season with fractured orbital bone and cheekbone.
During the slugfest of a game on Saturday against the Rangers one of the uglier moments was when Mike Knuble and Brendan Shannahan collided. The result was Shannahan had to be carted off the ice on a stretcher and he appeared to be seriously injured.
It turns out he had a concussion and is recovering fine. Ironically, Mike Knuble is in worse shape and he walked off the ice on his own power.
GM Paul Holmgren said the right side of Knuble's face is still too swollen to be operated on and they need to repair a fractured orbital bone around his eye and a fractured cheekbone.
Considering this season is an utter disaster it would make sense for the Flyers to just shut him down for the season.

McNabb hasn't spoken to Andy Reid directly in the past few weeks as their family has dealt with the two oldest sons dealing with a litany of legal troubles. However, he and the coach have text messaged back and forth.
"It was just for him to know I have his back and will continue to pray for him and for him to understand we're in his corner," McNabb said.
McNabb also addressed questions about his rehabilitation from the ACL injury he suffered in the loss to the Tennessee Titans in mid-November.
He still has "somewhat of a limp" and is working very hard to get rid of it. This comes with the territory, because remember he's only 3 months removed from the injury. He also wouldn't guarantee that he'll return in time for the season-opener.
It would be nice to see McNabb return as quickly as Carson Palmer did (Palmer blew out an ACL in a playoff game and returned for preseason) but there are no definites when it comes to this injury. Every individual is different. Whether or not the Eagles re-sign Jeff Garcia their offense will be in capable hands.
A.J. Feely showed in the Atlanta game that he can run the offense very well. Of course, it would behoove the Eagles to re-sign Donte Stallworth if Garcia walks.
They'll have their work cut out for them to re-sign the speedy wideout and improve their defense, since they're only $12 million under the cap.
--------------------------------
Allen Iverson fired some more shots at the Sixers the other day.
Iverson still has kind things to say for his teammates and the fans, but is still very bitter over the way things ended with the 76ers.
He contends that he didn't go into Billy King's office and demand a trade. That wasn't quite the issue.
The straw that broke the camel's back was when Iverson blew off an event where the players went bowling with premium season ticket holders and corporate sponsors. And, he blamed his absence on the pain killers he was taking for his tooth procedure. Then, the next day in practice he refused to practice and Mo Cheeks ordered him to practice or he wouldn't play, and Iverson told him to go F himself. And, that was it.
Soon after he was placed on the inactive list and was shipped out of town.
Iverson's demands for a trade weren't the heart of the issue; it was his propensity for defying any sort of authority and doing what he damn well pleased.
And, now Iverson is giving his revisionist historical account of what supposedly went down. He is doing what he does best, spin-doctoring and deflecting blame from himself.
I wonder if he and Terrell Owens trade notes.

Pitchers and catchers report; Phillies rife with optimism.
With the addition of Freddy Garcia the Phillies have many reasons to feel optimistic about this upcoming season. Garcia joins a staff that includes staff ace Brett Myers, who is developing into one of the best pitchers in the National League, along with Cole Hamels who is one of the best young pitchers in baseball. With Jamie Moyer and wildcard Adam Eaton filling out the rotation the Phillies now have one of the best staffs in the NL.
Garcia went 17-9 with a 4.53 ERA last year and more importantly he owns a 5-2 postseason record.
He is entering the final year of his contract and with a career 116-71 record and 4.01 ERA he will most likely command a salary in the $15 million per year range, especially considering Barry Zito just signed a 7 year deal worth $18 million per.
One thing is certain, as the Phillies embark upon another season they are putting out their best pitching staff since '93 and if you combine that with the offense they have, then they are the odds-on favorite to win the NL East.
--------------------------------
The Eagles are projected to be about $12 million under the cap. And, that number is misleading since they'll need to allocate some of that money to their draft picks.
And, let's remember they have Juqua Thomas, Jeff Garcia, and Donte Stallworth to consider resigning. This wouldn't leave much room to dedicate to signing a free-agent outside linebacker even if they lose Dhani Jones' contract.
And, it's unlikely they'll give up on free agent bust Darren Howard after just one season, so that money won't be freed up either.
It's not a good year for the Eagles to have so little room under the cap.
How bad does that Mike Patterson contract extension look now?

BREAKING NEWS: Flyers trade Peter Forsberg to the Nashville Predators.
The Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to trade Peter Forsberg to the Nashville Predators for Scottie Upshall, Ryan Parent, a first-round pick and a third-round pick, according to a reports by Canada's TSN and the Philadelphia Daily News on Thursday night.
Forsberg was a healthy scratch tonight in their game against the Maple Leafs.
This is coming on the heels of a meeting between Snider and the team captain this afternoon.
For the Flyers to receive two young prospects and two high draft picks for what is essentially a rental player is a boon to the team. They probably couldn't have done much better than this.
Even though he's the best player on their team they had to get something for him while he was still healthy.
And, lets face it, the Flyers are better off developing their youngsters and going for the top draft pick. They are in very much the same boat as their Wachovia Center mates the 76ers.

Sixers come back, but fall short against Wizards 92-85.
On a night when they unveiled their new red jerseys with "Phila" emblazened on the front, the Sixers couldn't turn that new look into a W.
Gilbert Arenas struggled through another miserable shooting night (8-for-26 for 22 points), but this time the Wizards prevailed in South Philly.
Andre Iguodala racked up the assists once again with 13 dishes. And, Sammy Dalembert had another dominating night on the glass with 17 boards. Kyle Korver added 18 points.
All five starters reached double figures though and more importantly the Celtics finally won tonight, crushing the Bucks 117-97 thus putting the Sixers 3 games behind the Celtics in the loss column.

Larry Brown was on Howard Eskin's show on 610-WIP today and was non-commital about whether or not he'd return to coach the Sixers. When asked if he'll coach the team next year he said he "hopes that Mo Cheeks" is the coach of the team next year.
He was also asked if he sees himself coaching again and he said he does. He misses the practices and being around the players, but certainly not the games.
I bet bet he misses those fat paychecks too!
--------------------------------
And, why in the world would he?
The young players on this team need a point guard who actually distributes the ball so they can develop. This was one of the primary reasons why Iverson was traded to Denver.
King also said they will "probably not" make any moves before the trade deadline, which comes up on the 22nd.

Andy Reid takes leave of absence from the Eagles.
The Eagles have announced today that Andy Reid will take a leave of absence from the team for a month to tend to the situation with his two sons. The story has rocked the Reid family in the past two weeks and has become a definite distraction for the organization.
Insiders are saying that Reid isn't really walking away from the job for a month. Rather, he's simply working from home and will be consulted with on all personnel matters.
Many fans and people inside the media have stated that Reid should take one or two years off.
My question to them is this, "how do you know what is good for he and his family?"
As somebody who recently dealt with my father losing a battle with cancer and other personal problems in the last 6 months, I for one know that work is a positive elixir for tragedy and emotional pain. Maybe Coach Reid needs that elixir.
It's nobody's place to say what's good for him except the man himself.
He will be consulted with on the upcoming combine, free agency, and the draft like he normally would. The difference is he's a phone call away and closer to his sons, which is where he feels he needs to be.
I could sit here and say what I'd do in his situation, but how the hell do I know what I would do? We're talking an abstract construct here. I could tell you all what to do while caring for your father who is dying of cancer like I did, but really you don't truly know what to do until you're there.
So, it's best if everybody ceases with the two cents and just be resigned to the fact that he'll handle it his way.

Forsberg and Snider will keep talking to discuss whether he stays or goes.
The early indications coming out of the Forsberg-Snider talks are that he is non-commital about returning to the team after this season.
The Flyers have publically stated that they have "agreed to continue their discussions."
One can interpret that several ways, but my hunch is that he's a goner. And, it's in their best interests to make that a reality ASAP. He has finally played a string of games in a row without bitching or complaining about his skate.
Forsberg is without a doubt a great player, but my respect for him has gone out the window after his pissing and moaning about the skate. Enough about the skate. Get on the damn ice and play.
He just doesn't have that heart that's required of a superstar for this type of team. This is a team that needs a dominant superstar who will risk getting his throat gashed by a skate in order to win. This is a team that needs more draft picks and youth, and Forsberg can net them that.

Sixers fight back, but the Mavs' offense too much for them in the end.
At one point in the third quarter it appeared the Sixers were going to throw in the towel when they were behind by 30. And, then they mounted a run and came back to within 8 in the fourth quarter.
However, Jason Terry hit consecutive jumpers to keep them at bay and the Sixers simply ran out of gas.
Andre Iguodala made an electrifying play during their fourth quarter fizzle though. Willie Green missed a layup and he grabbed the ball and made a dunk that was reminiscient of Vince Carter's trademark dunk in the 1999 slam dunk contest.
Iguodala once again led the way with 21 points, while Korver had 18, and Andre Miller chipped in with 16.

According to ESPN's John Clayton, Jeff Garcia will go to Tampa Bay.
Clayton feels that Garcia is "this year's version of Brian Griese," a solid backup QB who could come in and work well with Jon Gruden's version of the West Coast offense.
The Eagles of course are already beating the A.J. Feely drums. Not that that's the worst thing in the world. Like I said, if a team offers Garcia three years at $12 million with $4 million up-front, would it make sense for the Eagles to match that or exceed that?
I say no.
That money would be better spent on a run stuffer or taking that money and putting it towards a stud linebacker.

No answer yet on Forsberg's status after meeting with Ed Snider.
Peter Forsberg met with Ed Snider yesterday, but so far there is no answer or inclination as to what his status will be.
With the trade deadline looming the Flyers have to you know what or get off the pot soon.
Will they trade him to a contender for a draft pick or picks, or some younger players? Or, will they re-sign him next season and build around him as they look to rebuild with 20-some million in cap room.
It's anybody's guess at this point.

Flyers win their first game at home since November, beating the Blues 4-3 in OT.
Normally when you see a hockey team putting a goaltender out on the ice with a plain white mask, you know they are in trouble. Tonight wasn't the case as Michael Leighton, the Flyers' newest goalie helped them win their first home game in 78 days. This was his first win in nearly three years.
Simon Gagne tied the game in regulation and then just 27 seconds into OT won it on a power-play rebound shot by Mike Knuble.
The Flyers are setting records this year for futility. They set a new record for consecutive losses with 10 and nearly broke that record later on this season. And, their home-losing streak was quite remarkable.
It's almost impossible to go winless for 2 1/2 months, but in the Flyers' case the bottom of the valley is the limit.

Sikahema was on Garry Cobb's show on 610-WIP last night and stated that family is very important in the Mormon faith, and much more important than a career. Added to that, children are seen as a cherished item in the Mormon faith.
The former Eagle punt returner said he would advise Reid to leave so that he can spend time with his younger children, who are 13 and 15 so they don't wind up going down the same path as the older sons Garrett and Britt.
If Reid were to leave the Eagles it could have horrible implications for the franchise. This is Andy Reid's team and say what you want about him as a "gameday coach" or as a "playcaller", but bottom line is has built a very good franchise from the ground up. And, considering there are no quality coaching candidates out there it would leave the Eagles in the hands of Marty Morhninweg who was a baffoon in Detroit.
While this is just conjecture on Sikahema's part, as a fellow Mormon he does present a strong case here.
Chances are if something does happen it would be sooner rather than later. Free agency is just 2 weeks away and the draft is 2 1/2 months away.

Clippers beat the Sixers in a heart breaker; win 90-89.
This was a game that was back and forth after the Sixers blew a 13-point lead with 2:22 left in the third quarter.
The Sixers appeared to be set to take the lead, but Samuel Dalembert blew a layup with 1:21 remaining.
For the 76ers the usual suspects brought their games tonight. Iguodala had 22 points, which marks the 10th time in 11 games he has gone over the 20-point mark. Dalembert had 14 points and 15 rebounds, giving him his 15th double-double on the season.
They had no answer for Sam Cassell (as was often the case historically) who tore them up as he suffered from the flu. It wasn't bad enough to stop the little guy from burning them for 22 points.
And, for those of you interested in the Sixers' lottery status. They are 17-34 and are 3 losses behind the Celtics in the loss column who are redefining how to tank it, with a 12-37 record.

Jeff Garcia says the price must be right for him to re-sign with the Eagles.
Garcia did a little Q and A, while holding an autograph session at the Philadelphia International Auto Show and a few things were clear.
One, he isn't going to make a decision until he fields offers from other teams.
Two, the Eagles are going to have to pay him more than they did last season if they expect to keep him.
Three, like any player he's ultimately going to do what's in his best interests. And, can you blame him?
The question is, will the Eagles be prepared to match an offer from a team who may pay him "starter money?" And, my opinion is they won't.
If a team offers Garcia a 3-year contract for $12 million with $4 million up-front, would it make sense for the Eagles to match that? I say no. He's only going to be a back-up and it would be insane for them to pour that kind of money into a back-up quarterback.
Yes, he revitalized the Eagles' season.
Yes, he was a popular player among fans and will be sorely missed, if he receives starter money from another team.
However, there is only so much money that can be allocated to the back-up quarterback position.
That is money that can be used towards signing a starting linebacker, or a run-stuffer, which is what this team really needs. They have a starting quarterback already and his name is Donovan McNabb. If need be, A.J. Feely will start the season while McNabb is still recovering.
However, let's point to Carson Palmer who tore his ACL in a playoff game and returned for the season-opener.
McNabb is one of the hardest working players in the NFL. Something tells me he should be ready for their season-opener in September.

Flyers lose to the Penguins AGAIN. Fall to pens 5-4 in shootout.
This marks the third consecutive home game in which they have lost in a shoot-out or in overtime. And, overall it's their 13th straight loss at home.
The Penguins have been on fire of late and at 28-17-9 are on the opposite end of the lowly Flyers who at 13-33-8 are the worst team in the NHL by far. It isn't even close. They have 34 points and the team closest to them is the LA Kings, who have 45 points and a 18-30-9 record.
The Flyers won't have to worry about another team jeapordizing their chances to get the number one pick, unlike the 76ers. However, the NHL draft is remiss of a talent like Sydney Crosby, who of course killed them again tonight, with the only goal in the shootout.

As I had mentioned a few weeks ago, the Cowboys were interested in Wade Phillips as a head coach, then they interviewed him.
They took the final step and hired him yesterday.
Phillips may be a good defensive coordinator, but as a head coach he's a dope. He has an 0-3 record in the playoffs and a mediocre coaching record during his stints in Denver in Buffalo.
Remember, he's the coach who chose Rob Johnson to start over Doug Flutie.
Enough said.

Sixers defeat Bobcats 92-83 and fall further out of running for top pick.
Now that the Sixers have a shot at a top-2 draft choice they are doing the last thing they need to do; winning consistently.
Or, maybe this team is that closer to becoming a playoff team now that they have rid themselves of Iverson and Webber. No doubt, they are a better team without both of them.
And, perhaps they like the Phoenix Suns can land somebody like Amare Stoudemire with a top 5 or top 6 pick.
Even so, it wouldn't hurt to play people like Louis Williams and Bobby Jones more so they can give themselves less of a shot at winning. Hell, the Boston Celtics are rewriting the book on how to give yourself a greater chance at a #1 pick. They've lost 16 in a row now.
With that said, it's nice to see the Sixers developing their younger players like Rodney Carney, Andre Iguodala, and Samuel Dalembert.
Andre Iguodala had another banner game for the Sixers tonight scoring over 20 points for the 5th time in the last 6th games. He had 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Britt Reid was charged with various gun and drug charges.
Reid was charged with carrying a firearm without a licenese, which is a a third-degree felony under PA state law. He was also charged with drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, simple assault, making terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime, and making a false report to law enforcement authorities, the District Attorney's Office said.
After his vehicle was searched, authorities found a shotgun, small quantities of marijuana, cocaine, and Oxycodone.
He was released after bail was posted.
Say what you want about Andy Reid as a coach, but this situation with his kids is something that any parent never wants to see happen to their kids.
Already there is a public outcry about class differences and the proverbial "double standard" that exists for those who "have." Many are criticizing the Reid's because their kids are being treated differently than those who aren't wealthy.
There isn't a parent out there who wouldn't use what's accessible to them if they were in the Reid family's position.
Another interesting facet of this legal unfolding is that many people can now relate to Andy Reid on a human level. There is certainly no doubt that he'll probably keep his thoughts to himself on this, but for the first time many people can empathize with him.
And, empathy knows no boundaries regardless of class, race, sex, or creed.

'Nova star forward Curtis Sumpter scored 14 points and grabbed seven boards.

Will Andy Reid step away from coaching temporarily?
Another issue coming to the forefront regarding the legal saga with the Reid famly is whether or not Andy Reid will step away.
Most feel that if he decides to take a step away, it will only be temporary.

Now that Super Bowl XLI is in the books, we can see what it happens when you run the ball effectively in a big game.
Dominick Rhodes and Joseph Addai combined for 190 yards on the ground.
Peyton Manning has rid himself of his playoff demons and got his team to the promised land. And, now that he has done that, Donovan McNabb is now the high-profile quarterback in the NFL who must win the big one.
Many people will point to McNabb's numbers in the 3 NFC Championship losses and the Super Bowl and say "he's not a big game quarterback." What people won't admit is that Andy Reid abandoned the run in every one of those games. The Tampa Bay game was much of his fault. However, there is no reason he should have been put in a position to throw the ball 49 times. Duce Staley started off the game like a house on fire and then was put out by Reid. For what reason nobody knows.
Also, in the Carolina game Duce Staley was running through their defense and again Reid decided to let Koy Detmer try to win the game after McNabb was pulled from the game due to that rib injury caused by the infamous cheap shot by Brenson Buckner. And, the 3 interceptions were the fault of the receivers if you recall-the ball deflected off the chests of James Thrash and Todd Pinkson twice, and the other one was caused by Todd Pinkston bailing on a route.
So, there's more to it than just McNabb. The Super Bowl can be pinned on him like Tampa Bay game. He made some terrible decisions in the first half, which kept the Patriots in the game. If he hadn't made that horrendous interception while attempting a pass to Westbrook in the first half, and hadn't been picked off the other time they would have had at least a 2-TD lead heading into half time. The game should have never come down to the final 5 minutes.
But, this off season will be a critical one for #5. He's coming off the most serious injury of his career. He's come under much fire for petty reasons. There is a vocal minority, which seems to be heard quite often. They criticize him for everything from his "over-sensitivity" to what his Mom says, to his facial expressions on the sideline. They are looking for any reason to run him out of town. There is no reason why I don't think McNabb shouldn't recover just fine.
And, I don't see any reason why he can't win the big one should Andy Reid just decide to do what Tony Dungy did last night, and that's run the ball.

Sixers win again, knock off Nets in OT 100-98.
Andre Iguodala continued his great play of late with 23 points, 15 assists, and 7 rebounds.
Wow.
Where has this come from?
Samuel Dalembert had 14 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.
Wow.
Is Andre Miller that good?
Make no mistake about it, this is a lottery team. However, when you see what Andre Miller is doing for this development of these players it's pretty fun to watch. A month ago Dalembert was seen as another contractual albatross and Iguodala was a dunker.
Now, both of them look like building blocks to a bright future.

Phillies possibly looking at trading Rowand to the Padres for Linebrink.
Linebrink would give their bullpen an instant force, somebody who can not only set up games, but an experienced reliever who could step in and close should Flash Gordon hit the DL.
However, they should try and move Lieber instead of the gritty Rowand. Rowand gives their team a defensive presence and most importantly a leader in the clubhouse. They also would lose a lot of depth in the outfield by making this move. Victorino would have to play center, Burrell would of course stay in left, but then Jayson Werth would be their starting right fielder, and they'd have virtually nobody to come off the bench.
Right now Victorino is listed as their starter in right, with Werth serving as the back-up. And, that's it.

Sixers lose a heart breaker to the Warriors 102-101.
Say what you want about whether or not you want the Sixers to tank it or compete for integrity of the game, but last night's game was brutal no matter which side of the fence you sit on.
It was a typical heart breaker; the second such game in two nights as the Flyers blew their game against the Devils with 30 seconds left the previous night.
On Friday night it was the Sixers' turn as Al Harrington put back a rebound with 1.2 seconds left to secure the victory for Golden State.
The loss spoiled yet another great game by Andre Iguodala, who had his second triple double this season and third of his career, with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and a career-high 13 assists.

Peter Forsberg working on another solution for his skate.
At this point, who the hell cares? Isn't this about the 158th time we've heard Forsberg and his doctors declare that they've "found the right skate."
It would behoove the Flyers to get something, anything for an aging star who isn't going to be back next year.
Just like when Allen Iverson would say he'd turn the page and try to do everything to win a championship, and help his teammates become better, we knew it was BS. The same is starting to ring true here.
Who gives a damn about his skate anymore? The Flyers are going to be a totally different team next year after they land the top choice in the draft and have roughly 20 some million in cap space.
It's time to move on with Forsberg.

The Cowboys could possibly hire Ron Rivera as their next coach.
Now, I must say I'm surprised. Before Jerry Jones was interviewing the same old coaches, the revolving doors if you will like Wade Phillips and Norv Turner. I must say I'll be impressed if he hires Ron Rivera as their next coach.
Rivera was a former Eagles defensive coach under Jim Johnson who has since gone to Chicago to serve as the defensive coordinator under Lovie Smith. He is seen in many circles as the next big time coach-ala Sean Payton.
I won't necessarily fear the Cowboys, because their team just isn't that great, but Rivera would put their franchise in a good direction and I was kind of hoping they'd hire a low rent coach so we could harken back to the good old days of Dave Campo.
Let's face it, it's fun when the Eagles treat the Cowboys like a towel used to wipe up bong water in a dorm room.

Phillies extend Brett Myers for 3 years and $25.75 million.
When I first heard the Phillies signed Brett Myers to a contract extension for 3 years I was elated. I also figured it would have to be for around $40 million. Then, when I heard it was for just over $8.5 million per season I couldn't believe my ears.
Just how can Brett Myers, an up and coming ace on this staff make less per year than Adam Eaton, who the Phillies just signed for $10 million per year?
How can a pitcher like Myers who has averaged 200 innings and 200 strikeouts the past two seasons, with a 3.80 ERA make half as much per season as Barry Zito?
Let's break things down here. Aside from Zito's 23-5 Cy Young season he has been decent. He's averaged over 200 innings, but been just barely above a .500 pitcher, while having roughly the same ERA as Myers if you average out those 5 other seasons. The Giants signed him to a 7-year deal for $126 million, which might be the worst contract I've ever seen in my lifetime. He's making over $17 million per season, while Myers will net just over $8.5 million over the next 3 years.
Now, either the Giants are the stupidest ball club ever, or Brett Myers has the stupidest agent ever.
The truth probably lies somewhere in between. The Giants wanted to get an ace caliber pitcher at whatever cost. The Phillies for whatever reason locked up their ace on a low-risk deal for a total bargain.
You have to wonder why they got him so cheap. I'm stupified over this one.
It's a hell of a deal for the Phillies. You can't sum it up any other way than that.
--------------------------------
There has been a lot of criticism of Donovan McNabb by fans and some hosts on the radio this week and it's really unwarranted.
It's time for people to just get over it and accept that he isn't going to really open up. Mike Schmidt was the same way, but you know what; he helped the Phillies win their only title ever. And, he was also the greatest Phillie ever.
Donovan McNabb is the best quarterback in the history of the Eagles.
Sure, Randall Cunningham wowed us with his legs and highlight reel plays. I own three different Cunningham jerseys and was a huge fan of his. However, he wasn't the quarterback that McNabb is. McNabb is a better QB. Randall was a better athlete.
Ron Jaworski was tough and exemplified what it takes to be a Philadelphia player, but the numbers don't lie and McNabb has him beat by miles.
Norm Van Brocklin was overrated. When you look at his statistics there is just no way that he should be in the Hall of Fame.
He played three years with the Eagles and of course helped them win their last title in 1960, but just look at these numbers. In 1958 he had a 53% completion percentage, 15 TD's and 20 picks, with 2409 passing yards. In 1959 he had 16 TD's, 14 picks, 2617 yards, and a 56% completion rate. And, in 1960 he had his best year with a 53.9% completion rate, 2471 yards, 24 TD's, and 17 picks.
If McNabb had a year like his first two seasons there would be a plethora of fans ready to march him out of town.
In fact Van Brocklin's overall numbers are mediocre. He has a career 54% completion percentage and 173 TD's and 178 interceptions!
McNabb on the other hand has a 58% completion rate in his career, 152 TD's and just 72 INT's. Granted, he's had his miscues. The Tampa Bay debacle was his fault. The Carolina game you can't pin it on him; the receivers allowed the balls to bounce off their chests, resulting in INT's. The Super Bowl was his fault. He blew it in the first half on the interception in the end zone when he attempted the pass to Westbrook.
And, the other day he denied throwing up in the last five minutes. I'll be one to say that he doesn't assume the blame enough when he should. However, for people to bitch and moan about how he's insensitive or that he doesn't say enough is flat out petty. The numbers don't lie. He's the Eagles best quarterback ever. He's capable of leading them to the promised land.
Bear in mind, in their big-game losses Andy Reid abandoned the running game. And, when that happens the defense just blitzes and blitzes and we saw in the Super Bowl what happens when McNabb gets hit every other play.

Eldest son of Andy Reid admits to using heroine before accident.
Garret Reid, 23 waived his right to remain silent and acknowledged he used heroine according to a search warrant affidavit.
Both he and his brother Britt Reid are both awaiting results of blood tests, which could cause them greater legal troubles. On top of that, Britt Reid, 21 allegedly brandished a fire arm in a road rage incident, which could bring even more trouble his way with the law.
The other driver in the accident, a 55-year old woman was treated and released at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
According to state court records both Reid's have had other brushes with the law regarding traffic infractions. Garrett Reid pleaded guilty to three speeding charges, operating a vehicle without a valid inspection, and disregarding a traffic-control device in Radnor Township in 2001.
In April Britt Reid pleaded guilty to speeding in Philadelphia. And, he is a defendant in a lawsuit involving a man who said he was injured in a 2002 accident involving Reid.

Flyers lose another heart breaker in OT to Devils.
With just 32 seconds left in regulation Zach Parise tied the game up 5-5 when Simon Gagne and Denis Gauthier coughed up the puck behind the net.
Who didn't see this coming? And, really who thought the Flyers would pull it out in OT after blowing another victory?
They of course fell to the Devils in overtime, thus losing their 12th straight game at home.
The Flyers probably couldn't even win at home right now even if the game were fixed in their favor. It's pretty sad.

Sixers win again, defeating the Hornets 89-78 in Chris Paul's first game back.
The Sixers still have the third-worst record in the NBA, but it won't remain that way for long if they continue with their improved play.
On behalf of the fans of the Sixers I am pleading with the Sixers to back that foot off the peddle a bit!
It's good to see the young players develop. This is what happens when you have a point guard in there (Andre Miller) who actually moves the ball and is willing to share the rock.
However, the Sixers need to suck this year. They shouldn't just quit, but rather they should control their destiny by playing the scrubs some more. You know, maybe play Kevin Ollie some more minutes. Play Alan Henderson some more. Or, play Louis Williams 15 minutes a night. Hell, play Joe Smith 40 minutes!
Seriously, they need to compete, develop the youngsters (like they're doing) but not screw themselves out of a top 3 choice in this draft.
We already know about Greg Oden and Kevin Durant; they are two franchise players.
The third best prospect is 6-10 power forward Brandon Wright from North Carolina, who is the third best freshman in the country behind Mr. Oden and Mr. Durant of course. His only draw back is he's lanky (just 210 pounds), but he is an excellent rebounder and shot blocker.
Clocking in at fourth is Joakim Noah, who we all know helped propel the Gators to the NCAA Championship last season. He's in the same mold as Wright. His luster has worn off a bit though, but he'd be a nice consolation prize at number 4, should the Sixers not make the top 3.
And, with the way they're playing they just might.
--------------------------------
The Suns win their show-down with the Spurs 103-87.
The game was much closer than the final score indicated as the Spurs were right there with the Suns with just a few minutes to go.
And, the Suns' speed was just too much. This is one of those defining games where the torch has been passed.
Amare Stoudemire brought his A+ game last night as he had 24 points and 23 rebounds against the best big man since Shaq-Tim Duncan.
The other usual suspects shined, as Steve Nash had 13 points and 11 assists. Shawn Marion grabbed 12 rebounds, and Barbosa had 25 points.
If the Suns continue to play defense like this and rebound in that fashion, they'll be the NBA champs.
Note to the Sixers. This is why you must suck for a year. The Suns did it and got Amare Stoudemire in the draft. You have to ensure you have a shot at landing an impact big man. And, you have to blow up the cap to get an impact point guard like Steve Nash.
It's how it's done.
